Our Elementary section is designed for ages 6-12 years in the individually paced curriculum that challenges children academically and safeguards their well-being and sense of self. The elementary curriculum encompasses language, math, geometry, physical and cultural geography, history, botany, zoology, matter and astronomy. The work in this section frequently involves research, discussion and large-scale projects. For children who have completed Montessori Early Childhood Programs, the environment offers continuity with familiar routines and learning materials that offer new lessons and opportunities for more complex exploration and discovery. Children who are new to Montessori quickly feel at home with the inspired teaching that appeals to their deepest interests, and with distinctive, hands-on learning materials that teachers introduce.
In a Montessori Elementary classroom, pupils work individually or in small groups, at tables or on mats on the floor. The environment: soft colours, uncluttered spaces, natural lighting, materials on accessible shelves according to curricular area, set the stage for activity that is focused and calm and conveys a sense of harmony and order that both comforts and inspires. The classroom is a happy community. Pupils take joy in their work. They invent, explore, experiment, create, and engage in lots of activities for self development and independence.
We practice multi-age groupings and this strengthens the entire community. Older children support the growth and development of younger children through socialisation, assisting with new work or teaching skills they have mastered. They also work with younger children in areas of the curriculum in which they themselves may need more practice, without stigma. Younger children follow the example set by the older pupils, and have peers to work with in areas of the curriculum in which they may be more advanced. This multi-age community provides opportunities for all individuals to learn from each other. Most times, it develops an appreciation of differences.
Although a Montessori School, we also incorporate other subject areas to maintain an equilibrium between our method and the State’s curriculum. This gives the pupils a broader perspective of events around them.
‘For parents who invest in a Montessori education beyond the earliest years, you are gifted with a child who goes into the world able to reach their highest potential-not only academically and eventually in their careers, but as human beings who are going to give back and make it a better world’.
